Whether you believe it or not, climate change is real.

As Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimates, around 25-30% of food is either lost or wasted worldwide, contributing to around 10% of total man-made greenhouse gas emissions. This is because producing food waste demands a vast amount of resources like water, land and energy. Brexit alone might add up to 142,000 tonnes of food waste within the next 6 months — writes Independent. This is on the top of 4.5 million tons of edible food wasted by British households every year! That is enough to fill 38 million wheelie bins!

This number has decreased by 7% in the past 3 years but there is much more we can do…

Food Waste Action Week 2021

We are proud to participate in the Food Waste Action Week 2021, an initiative run by Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP). WRAP aims to effectively halve food waste by 2030, supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goal.

According to the United Nation Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), “If food waste were a country, it would be the world’s third largest emitter after China and the USA”.

So how can you help?

Our top tips on how to avoid food waste

Reducing food waste is great for the planet… and for your wallet!

Tackling household food waste can help an average British family save up to £700 per year, which is nearly £60 per month, says The Guardian.

To do so, you can:

  • Plan your meals ahead of your grocery shopping to avoid temptations and buying unnecessary items.
  • Optimise food storage to prolong its shelf life.
  • Cook only what will be consumed.
  • Finish all your leftovers, get creative if needed!
  • Freeze food to preserve it and prevent it from going off.
  • Involve your kids in cooking and meal prepping.
  • Use bokashi bins at home — we can definitely help you with that one!

Additionally, if you have a garden, please start composting. It will not only help you to reduce the negative impact on the environment but also enrich the soil, helping you to maintain an organic and beautiful garden.
